You have been considering buying and planting your first rose bush. But you are afraid of the problems and challenges in cultivating a rose bush? Cultivating a rose bush is not as difficult as it may seem. Yes, there are problems with roses, but they are not insurmountable. With some guidance and knowledge you can overcome the common problems with roses and enjoy a healthy, thriving rose plant in your yard.

Classic Problems with Roses

One of the most common problems, but rarely discussed is limb breakage, especially during the growing season. Rose branches are by their nature inherently prone to breaking. During the summer months when the bush is fully loaded down with leaves and rose flowers the added weight increases the risk of a limb breaking.

Black spot, powdery mildew, and rusty spots on leaves are other major problems with roses. While mildew is a problem that is found prevalently, rust and black spot cases seldom develop. Bush roses, more than any other types of roses, have problems with disease and mildew.

Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew gets its name from how it looks when a colony is growing on a rose plant. It has a grayish-white color with a powdery mat. The powdery mat is filled with spores.

The environment plays a huge role in powdery mildew growth. Powdery mildew thrives in cloudy, humid conditions during warm days and cool nights. Day time temperatures in the eighties and high humidity during the night provide an excellent growth environment.

Other causes are from over crowding the plantings, planting a rose in an overly damp area or shaded locations where air movement is limited.

The most recommended solution to stopping powdery mildew is to use a commercial fungicide. If you want to use a more back to basics natural solutions consider baking soda spray, oil sprays, soap sprays, and garlic oil sprays.

Black Spot

Black spot as it name implies is the formation of black circle like dots on the upper side of the leaves. Upon close inspection the black spot has a fringed boarder. Black spots can be up to 1/2 inch in diameter. The leaf tissue surrounding the black spot will yellow and the leaf may drop off.

The prime cause of black spot is leaves getting wet and staying wet. The common culprit is the use of overhead irrigation from a sprinkler. If must use an overhead sprinkler water in the morning to allow ample time during the day for the leaves to dry off. A drip or ground based irrigation system is much more preferred to preventing black spot.

Use a fungicide that is registered for treating black spot. Being treatments at the first sign of infection and continue through out the growing season.

Rusty Spots (Rose Rust)

A rose rust infection appears as rust or orange colored growth on the underside of the leaf. As the fungus spreads the upper side of the leaf will develop yellow to orange spots. Older leaves are more susceptible to rose rust than new growth leaves. The infected leaves tend to drop off the bush prematurely.

Never wet the leaves at dusk. This will encourage rose rust and other fungi to attach the leaves.

When the rose bush becomes infected with rose rust, treat it with a fungicide. Follow the manufactures directions on application and reapplication.

Problems with roses should not be feared nor ignored. It takes a little time and effort to learn how to deal with the common problems with roses. Armed with this knowledge you can go on to cultivate a lovely rose garden. That will provide you with years of enjoyment and satisfaction.

If cultivating roses is deemed, in a way, a science and a discipline, then the practice of drying roses is an art that can be learned by just about anyone. When it comes to the planting and maintaining of roses, there are many different aspects that need to be appropriately understood in order for the roses to be able to grow healthy and beautiful. The matter of drying roses is not a different stuff altogether. You also need to study and master it.

Guide on Drying Roses

Drying roses is a great method that you can use in order to preserve their beauty (and perhaps their memory). If you are interested in drying roses, then you first have to make sure that you learn how to do it properly before you actually attempt it.

There are basically two most commonly used techniques in drying roses: air drying and sand drying. And you have to choose what type of technique you are going to use and then learn it.

Air drying is the easiest and requires the least amount of time to complete. It needs only a good pair of shears, some wire, a coat hanger and a dark dry location. With this technique, you begin by cutting the stem from the rose, as close to the head as you can possibly get, and then you insert a piece of wire about 6 to 8 inches long into the rose head.

When you are drying roses, you need to make sure that they are upside down, and so you want to take the end of one wire and wrap it around the bottom part of the hanger that you have, and then continue to wrap the wires of each rose until the hanger is full; just make sure that you leave some space in between each rose so that air can circulate around them.

Another way is to hang a bunch of roses upside-down from a nail. Just make sure that you leave the stems intact. Remove the bottom leaves, gather a few stems together and hold them together with an elastic band. Then you can place them in a dark and dry area until they are fully dried.

Once the roses are dried completely, you can mostly do whatever you want with them. For instance, you can keep them in a memory book or in a picture frame that you hang somewhere in your cozy living room for everyone to see. A piece of advice—place the frame wherever they are not going to get broken, like if you have children at home, you do not want to put them anywhere within their reach. Mastering the art of drying roses could earn you an extra income plus you may find it another form of enjoyment that whiles away lethargy and boredom.

If you want to plant roses in your garden, then it follows that you also need to learn how to care for roses.

There are probably not many additions that are more beautiful in a garden landscape than budding rose bushes. Unfortunately, many inexperienced gardeners shy away from these fragrant bloomers because they are unsure of how to properly grow and care for the plant. While care of roses will require some research and effort on the part of the tender, the steps involved in the process of rose care are not generally as difficult as it seems. The key is in seeking for good information to equip yourself about proper rose care before you bring one of those rose saplings home from the nursery to cultivate into your garden.

Watering Fundamentals

Roses do not like dry soil, but they also do not thrive where it is too wet. While this may seem like a confusing contradiction, it is easy to resolve the watering issue when caring for your roses with a few basic steps.

First, the soil around your plant should only dry out in the top inch or two. If the dry soil goes beyond this, your plant is not receiving enough moisture. Second, roses need a good long drink of water on a regular basis. The best method for this is to provide a sprinkler that will offer an appropriate soaking without too much runoff. Avoid a hard stream of water, since this will compact the soil, and could lead to disease and erosion.

Also, keep in mind when watering your roses that the foliage of these plants should not remain wet. This suggests that when caring for your roses, watering should take place in the morning or early afternoon hours, so that your plant has time to dry sufficiently before nightfall. A plant that has wet foliage too often will become vulnerable to diseases like black spot. Another method of watering that works well in the care of your roses is a drip irrigation system. Mulching is another wise step in the watering care of your roses to keep moisture at the root area where it is essentially needed.

Crash Course: Fertilizer 101

Roses like to be fed regularly, so a big part of the care for roses should be devoted into selecting the right fertilizer and applying it as needed. You can opt for an inorganic fertilizer that is high in phosphorous. Apply after the danger of frost and every six weeks after. You can also select an organic fertilizer that could include manure, fish fertilizer, bone meal or blood meal. Many of these types of fertilizers will offer the necessary nutrients for your roses over a longer period of time. Lime is another element of the soil that roses enjoy, so care of your roses should include a lime supplement once a year if the composition of your soil calls for it.

It is resourceful for one to do a stretch of research on how to properly care for roses. But when you discover yourself in a cul de sac and experience difficulty in taking care of your “babies”, it would not diminish your sense of worth or would make you feel ignorant to ask for the help of an expert. You wouldn’t want to trade the life of your precious roses for your pride, would you?

If North and South are the two opposing poles of the magnet, then when it comes to color, there could not be a more significant difference than that of black and white roses. The same holds true of the opposing contrast in their symbolism. While white roses indicate purity and cleanliness, black roses symbolize death and hatred.

You’ve seen in movies and certain celebrations that death and losses are depicted by black roses. However, developing a true black rose has proven to be impossible. While some deep red color roses may appear to be black, the only black roses available are artificially dyed. Black and white roses may appear together in certain celebrations, but the black rose on its own was often seen as a sign of death or impending doom.

During the Second World War, when a group known as the White Rose Society attempted to squash Hitler’s regime, the use of the black rose was to symbolize the power of the Reich. They fought for defeating what they saw as traitors, hence the victory of black or white. During the movies of the old west in America, there was always an overrated symbolism of the good guys wearing white hats and the bad ones sporting black. The symbolism of black and white roses remains as unswerved today as it was then.

Black Roses Often Equals Sorrow

In a Gothic culture, black often symbolizes a tragic romance and are used in other celebrations with darker meaning. They are also used in many birthday celebrations when a person reaches a certain age often described as being old or an object being decrepit. The black roses are usually white flowers dyed black, thus they are considered a fake color. Because black roses are obviously unheard of, a combination of black and white roses has been developed artificially in the lab to make them more realistic.

It is common in literature for the black rose to be used as a symbol of murder or for creatures of the night such as vampires or other non-worldly beasts. They have also been used as a warning by placing them on the door of a person marked for death by crime gangs. However, black and white roses are never used together as the mixed message they would send would confuse someone beyond thinking.

A close friend may send a single black rose to a person leaving for war on another trip from which they are not expected to return, while a single white rose may be sent to symbolize the hope that they remain true and promise to return unharmed. Black and white roses are indeed two battling objects that constantly oppose each other and could not be used together.
You first need to understand what each of them means so you could appreciate the worth of the twain.

Roses are one of the most exquisite and gorgeous flowers out there. Their availability in varied different colors contributes to their famous appeal. There are several colors of roses that you can choose from. If you are planning on planting roses in your garden, this is a significant decision that you should make. What color, or combination of colors, do you want to see in front of your home or in your backyard?

Colors Of Roses: The Existing Spectrum

For the most part, there are basically all different colors of roses. Whether you want red, pink, lavender, yellow, white, whatsoever—it is not impossible to find them. Aside from the fact that they are typically available, there are also other methods that you can use which allow you to basically create whatever colors of roses catch your fancy.

The color of your roses is incredibly important for a lot of different reasons. In particular, you have to think about how you plant them so that you can come out with a fitting and beautiful color scheme in your garden.

As a rule, you do not want a whole bunch of one color in one area and then have it scattered throughout the rest of the garden because this is going to create an unbalanced appearance. Instead, you choose several colors and then even them out across your garden. By doing so, you achieve a sense of neat balance and an attractive garden, which is what you should aim for.

This means that you have to set aside time and put some effort in planning before you actually plant the roses. Don’t get discouraged though, you will see that it’s worth all the hard work in the end, when you come out with incredibly positive and wonderful results.

The best idea here is to take a blank piece of paper and sketch out the area of your garden, not so much being precise with the exact measurements. Next, use colored pencils and mark the areas where you would like specific colors. That should give you a physical representation of what your garden may look like when finished.

From there, you can choose different flowers which are available in particular colors and plant them accordingly. If you take the time to plan beforehand, then you will see how much easier it is overall rather than just doing what instantaneously comes to your head first.

All of the time and effort that you invest at the start is going to be well worth it in the end when you already have built a delightful garden of roses in lush variety of colors. Take your time and have patience beautifying and breathing life to your garden.

A red rose or a white rose, even a yellow rose, is quite a bit ordinary these days. But a green rose?! That’s quite special in its rarity and one basking in verdant magnificence, which will surely capture anyone’s heart.
St. Patrick doesn’t only refer to a holiday in March or the name of a patron saint. Today, gardeners who hear the word “St. Patrick” may think of the species of rose that happens to be the greenest of them all. Green roses come in an array of shapes and shades. They are simply unique in a way that they are not the most common plants you will see lining the shelves of nurseries. In fact, most of the varieties of green roses are difficult to find that some can be purchased through some mail order companies. Nearly all of these roses have been hybridized by amateur and master gardeners alike, and come from distant parts of the globe.

Treat for A Leprechaun

The St. Patrick rose actually did not originate in Ireland at all, but in sunny southern California. The plant is surprisingly robust, and gives off many beautiful heads during the blooming season. The green buds of this “tea rose” will open to flaunt yellow flowers that become quite tinged with green over the course of a few days after blooming. This color will intensify on plants that are growing in shady areas, and offer beautiful, long stemmed green roses that you can get for your table. Wouldn’t it be an unusual centerpiece for a special dinner party or the perfect accent to your St. Patrick’s Day holiday décor?

Another green rose that did originate in Ireland is the species known as “Lime Sublime”. This rose is quite tolerant of heat, and will give its owner plenty of constant blooms in its distinctive shade. The flowers are a creamy white, blotched with plenty of green, and the bushes of this green rose become quite full of blooms even during the warmest part of the summer season. These roses are deficient on aroma, but abundant on beauty. They add an attractive and exceptional accent to many garden landscapes.

There is another species of green rose that has made an appearance in Maine, and this flower is known as the “Unique Green Rose”. This plant is distinguished for its large blooms of an apple-green hue. In a garden with this type of roses, you can spot plenty of them, with three to eight blooms per cluster. They appear to be quite substantial and resistant to some diseases such as black spot. While this rose is only found in Maine at present, and is not available for public purchase, the rising popularity of green roses may just bring this species on the market sooner or later.

Green roses are matchless—they bring a unique look to your garden landscape or anywhere else you place them. If you want to add a green rose to your outdoor collection, you can check the Internet for mail order companies that offer varieties of this extraordinarily stunning plant.

White usually stands for peace, purity and innocence. Does this also hold true for roses? When it comes to white roses, there are many different meanings that come into play, probably even more so than with any other shades of roses. Before you pick a bunch of white roses for yourself or for someone else, you should first understand the meanings of white roses so you don’t make a blind mistake or get misinterpreted.

Bouquets of white roses are usually seen on weddings and anniversaries. It is because aside from symbolizing pure love, they also stand for loyalty and fidelity.

The Different Meanings Of White Roses

There are actually many different meanings of white roses. For one, when you put a bouquet of white and red roses together, this signifies unity. So if you really care about and committed to someone, then you may want to consider giving them this type of bouquet of roses.

The primary meanings of white roses revolve around the fact that white denotes purity and brightness. With its pristine appearance, the white rose has come to symbolize innocence and security as well.

Early traditions used white roses as a symbol for true love—a connection which would later result in becoming the hallmark of the red rose. Notwithstanding, white roses undoubtedly continue to persist and keep their label as a symbol of innocence.
On another aspect, white roses are associated with honor and reverence, thus making them a fitting and perfect memorial for a departed loved one. Funeral and sympathy arrangements are often filled with white roses, as they traditionally use these roses to fill the bouquet as part of the overall tribute.

While most of the long-accepted meanings of white roses are still quite commonly used even today, others have in fact tended to become less popular. For instance, white rosebuds used to be considered as being a traditional symbol for girlhood and carried an underlying meaning of one too young for love.

Before you choose some roses, particularly white roses, you really should make sure that you are aware of the meanings behind them. By doing this, you become assured that you get the appropriate rose for the specific occasion, plus they end up having the most meaning.

It may look easy but really, planting roses requires arduous commitment and a little bit of patience. There are a multitude of different things that you need to know when it comes to planting roses. If you are planning on starting a garden and including roses in this garden, then you are really going to want to read on so that you can learn more about the issue of planting roses.

Simple Steps On Planting Roses

You really have to prepare before you actually begin planting roses, and this means getting all of the important materials that you are going to need together first and foremost. Some of the necessary materials that you will need are soil, water, fertilizer, pots, and spades.

Once you have all of these together, then you have to choose an area where you are going to plant your roses; you can either plant them directly in the ground in your back or front yard for example, or you can plant them in pots, to be repotted or planted in the ground later on.

You have a lot of decisions to make even in this planning stage; and you need to make them before you can go forward with the rest of the steps on planting roses.

Once you have prepared everything including your mindset, then the next thing that you have to do is actually plant the roses. On the onset of this step, make sure that there is plenty of moist soil. When you plant in this soil, pack firmly around where you have set the plant and then water lightly. Also, make sure that wherever you have planted the roses, there is sufficient sunlight throughout the day because roses need a lot of sunlight in order to thrive.

If you have planted the roses in your yard, take care that you do not have any other plants surrounding them that are going to crowd them too much. The same thing obviously applies to all other plants, yet it is extremely vital with roses because if they do not have enough room to grow, then they will wither and die.

To have beautiful blossoming roses in your garden, you should have even just a basic know-how on planting roses. It may not be easy at first but when you get the hang of it, you can actually enjoy the toil and reap lovely flowers in the end at the same time.

There are a lot of different types of roses that it can often make your head spin trying to learn about each and every one of them. Then again, why you should even learn about the different types of roses to begin with entails many good reasons.

Learn About The Different Types Of Roses

One of the most important reasons why you should learn about the different types of roses is that you can maintain each different kind properly if you decide to plant them in your flower garden.

Each different type of rose needs to be planted and cultivated in a different way. If you want your roses to thrive and be perfectly beautiful and healthy, then you should learn about all of the different types of roses that are out there.

Different Types Of Roses

There are many different rose families that you have to choose from. The following are some of the most popular: hybrid tea roses, floribundas, shrub roses, ground cover roses, and climbers.

<dir>

Hybrid tea roses are tall and long-stemmed roses that are ideal for cutting. They are mostly popular as the Valentine’s Day flowers that you typically see from florists and flower shops. These roses are usually borne singly, rather than in clusters.

Floribundas are roses that have actually only developed in the last century. These roses have large showy blossoms and bloom more freely than other roses. They are incredibly versatile roses—an individual shrub will easily fit into almost any sunny border planting.

Shrub roses are impressive for many different reasons. They have a natural disease-resistance characteristic, a willingness to grow in a variety of climates with minimum attention and care, and they have an incredibly compact growth habit. The emergence of shrub roses changed the way that people view roses.

The ground cover roses are low-growing roses which tend to cascade over walls or act as ground covers in perennial gardens. Most of them will only grow one to two feet tall while stretching three to four feet wide.

Lastly, climbers produce incredibly long canes that can be trained to a trellis, fence, or other support. If you wish, they can be grown up and over an arching trellis in order to make a striking entranceway.

</dir>

Roses, like many things, come in various types. Each of them has their own distinct characteristics and way of nurturing. It may be hard at first to learn all of them but in time, knowing the different types of roses will not only make you a master gardener but will also catch the interest of anyone who appreciates roses.
